In our participant’s words…

I was referred to a health coach via my health fund after I had begun cancer treatment. I was feeling unwell and very fatigued, and welcomed the opportunity to incorporate a separate person in my overall health care that wasn’t an oncologist or doctor, who was considering me as a whole person, not just my cancer diagnosis. Patrick’s phone calls to me were a bright spot in my week. He met me where I was at in terms of my understanding of nutrition, physical activity and mental health and was able to discuss these aspects in a relevant way. I never felt like he was preaching to me or dictating what I should do. He was patient and listened to me talk (often a lot!) and offered very practical solutions, coupled with the theory and reasoning behind them.

As a result, I felt like I had a better understanding of how to gauge what my physical and mental health could tolerate and how to move forward during such a period of uncertainty in my life. Since undertaking health coaching with Patrick, I have incorporated more exercise into my days, as well as more meditation and mindfulness. I have become more aware of what my body and mind are telling me and I am trying harder to advocate for myself.

I’m still fatigued from cancer but I am better at recognising my limits and also knowing when I am able to push through. I’d definitely recommend this program to anyone who would like to approach their health holistically and who want to feel better in themselves. Cancer involves a lot of uncertainty and a lot of waiting. Having someone external to all your treatment who phones you to check on how you are doing and who can positively challenge your thinking and behaviours has been really beneficial to my overall health. Thanks, Patrick!
